My son and I collected 170 pairs of sneakers, washed them and, yesterday, distributed them to the homeless/needy in our community via Hope Kitchen. Yes, I took time out of work to do this. Giving back is important for our society, our souls, and a great thing to teach our kids.

Recruiters are evaluating. We're not just looking for bodies to send to clients. I find it rude when someone picks up a phone to read something when I am talking. Not only are you ending the conversation through your lack of interest, but you've killed my interest in you too.

Looking back and 2nd guessing a decision when you're not in the moment takes emotional response out of the decision-making process but it doesn't negate the fact that emotions played a part in the decision you made. Pondering over it years later is an exercise in futility.

The guy walking near me in NYC was talking about his efforts to take a company to Series A at an obnoxiously loud decibel. No doubt some of that info was confidential. Had to bite my tongue to not say "get a room." Don't assume that b/c you are in public, you are anonymous.

Hang on to your seats, people. DO NOT, and I mean this, MEN, do NOT ACCIDENTALLY send dick shots to the head of HR for a company you are trying to get a job with...Yes, this just happened...I cannot make this stuff up.

#DearJane: I got fired. My employer wants to know if I officially want to be "let go" or if we want to say, "I resigned." What do I do?

Jane Ashen Turkewitz on LinkedIn: "#DearJane: I got fired. My employer wants to know if I officially want to be "let go" or if we want to say, "I resigned." What do I do? -If you choose the "let go" route, (don't ever use the term "got fired" because that automatically assumes cause, vs. lack of funding, change in direction, etc.) you are eligible for unemployment. So, for me, it's a no brainer, but maybe you've got a nest egg and you don't need unemployment $ and don't want it going down in "history" that you were "let go." I dunno... -If you say you resigned, you need to be able to talk through why you would resign without a job on interviews. People do it all the time because they just can't spend 1 more day torturing themselves in a job that's making them sick. And, it's very hard to find a job while working 15 hrs a day. -Did you know it was coming? Was the writing on the wall? One way to position it is to say: "This was a mutual decision. I came in to do x, completed it and was successful. My job was done and it was time for me to find my next challenge." ...If you go this route, you better make sure your employer is behind this positioning if s/he gets a reference call. -No matter what, don't be negative and focus on all the results you produced during your tenure!"
